As Witherley Services/Aggregate Industries employees, we have been given the opportunity to offer ourselves for volunteer work in the community, or as individuals to raise money via sponsorship to help a nominated charity. This opportunity has become available with our parent company, Holcim, celebrating 100 years in operation, and we have decided to raise money by competing in a triathalon to help raise money and awareness for UNICEF UK. We will be competing in the 'Jones Lang Lasalle Property Triathalon' on Friday 17th May 2013, which will take place at Dorney Lake, Eton. This venue was used for several Olympic rowing competitions, and the 'Triathalon' has been co-ordinated by 'The Human Race', one of the largest UK Triathalon event organisers within the UK. As mentioned previous, we shall be aiming to raise money for UNICEF UK. Internationally, UNICEF is a leading children’s organisation, and it's aim is to help and support children in over 190 countries around the World. UNICEF UK, in itself, are a registered charity, which aims to raise both funds and awareness to support UNICEF, in the running of Schools, Hospitals and local community centres throughout the UK. What does the Triathalon consist of? The 'Jones Lang Laselle Property Traithalon' consists of a 750 metre swim, a 5 kilometre run, with a 20 kilometre bike ride to finish! In order to help complete the challenge that lies ahead, since the turn of the year, we have both undertaken a 'strict' training regime. In preparation, Kerrian, has been swimming a mile a week, accumulating 3 miles of running on a weekly basis, and taking time to take part in various biking activities. Sam, on the other hand, like Kerrian, has completed a mile a week swimming, a mile run on a weekly basis, and an impressive 25 kilometre biking total, again on a weekly basis. It is our aim to raise a target figure of £200, although we hope to raise more! We hope you are able to oblige us with your sponsorship, no matter how little or large, and in order to make a donation to this very worthwhile cause. You can donate to the charity via thier webpage, www.justgiving.com/witherleywonderwomen, where more information regarding the Triathalon and UNICEF UK is also available. We would like to thank you in anticipation of any donations, and would appreciate any kind support you may wish to offer for Friday 17th May. Kind Regards, Kerrian and Sam, 'Witherley Wonder Women'

  • Chris Wootton's M80 Scheme

As part of Holcim celebrating their 100 years in operation, we have been given the opportunity to have a day away from the business to offer some volunteer work into the community, whether that be working on a local project or helping a local charity. I took this opportunity to offer my services to our local church, St Peters in Bardon. My family spend time at the church and there are always different projects that need to be worked on to help maintain/improve the church. St Peter’s has a perimeter wall that has been there since the church was built over 100 years ago and is made up of granite walling stone. The wall has become very weak and has started to fall down, mainly due to the large tree roots disturbing it. For health and safety reasons it was important that the wall was knocked down soon and that's where I came in. However, it wasn’t a case of just knocking the wall down, the church wanted to try to resell the stone to raise some money that can be spent on the upkeep of the church. I spent the day taking the wall down and stacking the generously sized stones on pallets, which may I add needed to be stacked 186 steps away from the wall!! Needless to say a very good job done that the people of the Church are truly thankful for.   Chris Wootton, Area Business Manager, Witherley Services, Mansfield.

  • Sam's Half Marathon

On October 21st I'm running the Birmingham Half Marathon for Birmingham Children's Hospital, specifically the liver unit. My nephew Jake was diagnosed with Biliary Artresia at 8 weeks old. This is a disease and basically the bile doesn't flow through the liver and poisons it, eventually stopping it working altogether. At 10 month's old he had to have a liver transplant. He is doing well now although it has been a struggle. He celebrated his 1st birthday last month and ate lots of cake! The liver unit depends heavily on outside donations and I'm fund raising because without their work and commitment, well it doesn't bear thinking about! I have a just giving page: www.justgiving.com/sarma-feldmanis any donations will be gratefully received

  • John's Bike Ride

On 3rdJune 2012 Witherley Director John Cockerill completed a John O’Groats to Lands End cycle ride in aid of MacMillan Cancer support. Together with old rugby playing fiend, Scott Macswan, 975 miles were covered in 11 days travelling through some of the most scenic parts of Scotland, England and even a bit of Wales (Chepstow for those that are interested!). Blessed thankfully by some fantastic weather, particularly in Scotland, the pair travelled unsupported staying at local guest houses en route. Despite a few hitches along the way – the bikes and luggage didn’t arrive at Wick airport on Day 1 (!) – the schedule went to plan and nearly £3500 has been raised through donations from work colleagues, family and friends. Commenting on the event John said “We have been overwhelmed by the generous support given by everyone who has donated, especially at this time of current economic difficulty and would like to thank everyone once again. An equally big thank you needs to go to our respective wives, Rachael and Carly, who had to put up with effectively being single parents for many evenings and weekends as we planned and trained in the preceding months. We love you both very much and promise we won’t do it again.....at least until the next time....!!” There is a website, www.justgiving.com/jcandswannysbigride, where more details can be found and where donations can be made should you wish.
